The 2010 winter Olympic Games, to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, are already causing some language-oriented issues.

It seems like I just finished blogging about the 2008 Summer Olympics. Fortunately, the 2010 Winter Olympics are on the horizon – with their own set of linguistic controversies:

“Vancouver's Olympic organizers are seeking additional funds from the federal government to help with French translation during the Games.

The committee won't disclose how much they'll be asking for at Tuesday's meeting with Public Works, but a recent study suggested they need as much as $1.7 million to adequately provide service in both official languages during the Games…

On Tuesday, MPs expressed resentment that despite years of meetings on the duality of languages at the Games, concrete action didn't seem to come until the Official Languages Commissioner released his report on the Games last year.”

(Extract from The Canadian Press, April 28, 2009)

Stay tuned to this blog for updates about how our bilingual neighbor will manage French and English – also the two official Olympic Games languages – in resolutely English-speaking Vancouver. Or should I say “affaire à suivre?”

Language Translation, Inc. provides translation, interpreting and localization services to major national and international corporations. Let us show you how good translation should be.

Betty Carlson

Subscribe to Language Lines, our monthly newsletter, for the latest news about the importance of languages in the business world.
