Demand exceeds supply for multilingual employees

Whether in the field of language translation or customer service, US companies are on the lookout for employees who can communicate in several languages. The problem is that there are not enough of them.

“Teaching is not the only field in which demand for foreign language education outweighs supply. The military also is in desperate need of translators who speak Arabic or other Middle Eastern languages.

Individuals with foreign language skills also can find a bevy of civilian job opportunities interpreting and translating, from the local village hall or medical office to the world of international commerce.

‘People with language skills can earn more because they are in greater demand, and because successful companies will pay them more to enlist their services,’ said Bret Lovejoy, executive director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.”
