European project aims to define translation skills

The European Master's in Translation (EMT) project outlines the skills needed to perform professional translation duties.

“The EMT project aims to help raise the standard of translator training in the EU and foster cooperation and exchanges between higher-education institutions offering translation courses.

The demand for highly qualified translators is expanding as the EU and other employers strive to cover their growing multilingual communication needs. Better translator training is needed to ensure a good match between graduates' competences and employers' requirements.

The EMT translator competence profile — drawn up with a group of prominent European experts — details the competences translators need to compete successfully for translation jobs in EU institutions and to work in the rapidly evolving field of multilingual and multimedia communication.”

Efforts are also being made in the USA to increase translator training programs and define necessary skills for language service professionals.
