Remote interpretation helps meet language service demands

Language interpretation needs are not being filled in many parts of the USA. Could remote interpreting be the solution?

The shortage of qualified language interpreters, especially in courtroom and medical settings, has been a recurring theme in the press – and, as a result, in this blog. One of the solutions to the problem is remote language interpretation, such as telephonic or video interpreting.

Two clips posted on YouTube by Common Sense Advisory demonstrate just how video interpreting works. The first one, uploaded in February, shows various language services, including video interpreting, available at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Los Angeles.

The second clip illustrates the workings of remote video interpreting in a legal setting.

The interpreter can engage in both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting; however, video quality is not yet good enough to allow him or her to see courtroom documents.

As demand for interpreting services increase, technological solutions will no doubt fill in some of the gaps – although in other cases, face-to-face contact will still be needed.
