Some 80 million people speak Punjabi in Pakistan, and 30 million more use the Indo-Aryan language in India. Because of significant numbers of Punjabi immigrants, the language is also frequently heard in the UK. And according to recent census figures, it could soon become the fourth language spoken in Canada. For the moment, the top languages used in Canada are English, French, Chinese, German, Italian and, in sixth place, Punjabi. However, Punjabi has already surpassed Italian and German in the province of British Columbia. “Hospitals, city halls, airports and markets [in Vancouver, B.C.] carry Punjabi signs… Guidelines on provincial issues — elections, health, old age and education — come out in Punjabi, as do government bills and notices,” reports SifyNews. “Interestingly, Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan is a Punjabi speaker.” At Language Translation Inc., we pride ourselves on keeping up with the latest language news, and enjoy sharing it with you on our three blogs: Document Translation, Language Development, and Localization.
