Hawaii Promises Language Translation Services During Emergencies

Sunday’s 6.7 magnitude earthquake revealed problems with the state’s crisis communication system, including lack of translation services.

Gov. Linda Lingle of Hawaii admitted that the state’s communication services faced difficulties in communicating emergency information during and after Sunday’s 6.7 magnitude earthquake. She has announced the creation of a committee of media broadcasters and Civil Defense officials in order to consider improvements, including asking private broadcasters to invest in backup power systems.

The Honolulu Star Bulletin reports that the newly-formed committee “would look at having certified translators for the state's most common languages to volunteer to translate information to non-English speakers during a crisis.”

The Hawaiian earthquake shows that emergency communications are yet another arena where states must get involved with language translation and interpretation. At Language Translation Inc. , we understand the importance of communicating in the native language of your target listeners, whether they be clients, patients or citizens facing an emergency situation. That’s why we offer high-quality language services in over 40 languages. “We speak your language…and theirs.”
