Language Translation: ATA Tops 10,000 Members
The professional organization has exceeded the 10,000-member mark for the first time in its history.
The American Translators Association (ATA) announced on October 10, 2007 that membership in the professional organization now exceeds 10,000. Founded in 1959, the ATA is the U.S.A.'s largest professional association of translators and interpreters. The group's previous membership record was 9,787, in 2006.
The boom in ATA membership parallels the nationwide increase in the need for language services such as translation and interpreting. "We are thrilled with the explosive growth that this vital profession has recently experienced," said Marian S. Greenfield, President of the ATA, in a recent press release. "The business of translation and interpreting continues to expand with the global economy and has become the new, hot career."
Greenfield emphasized that the $11 billion translating and interpreting services industry has experienced tremendous growth over the past decade, increasing at a rate of 10 percent to 15 percent annually, particularly in the areas of global commerce, healthcare and national security.
